about kid aid

Kid Aid is based on the idea that every child deserves an equal opportunity at life, regardless of their background. While volunteering for Children of Fire, Kid Aid founder, Kaone Mosime, was exposed to the life that children at the Slovo Squatter are forced to live in. Squatter Camps are environments where people, including children, live in atrocious conditions such as, people crammed closely together, with little food, sometimes there is no water and electricity, there’s stagnant water and what people call a home is a flimsy shack. Having a stable life there is like standing in quicksand. The youth already believes that it has no future because they already feel neglected by the system. Hence, based on her passion of helping young people, Kaone thought that it would be a good idea if an organisation was founded to help the children realise their potential, and that their dreams shouldn’t be limited just because of their background.

As mentioned before, the idea was born after Kaone had an interaction with some of the children, during her volunteer work at Children of Fire. Johannesburg School for the Blind, also known as Beka, is a Children of Fire sister organisation. They had planned a day where volunteers tutored both the Children of fire and Slovo children and Kaone was one of the teachers.  She was inspired to put Kid Aid into action after meeting a 10-year-old boy named Senzo. He does not have any educational background, but she could tell that he was clever because he is inquisitive and outspoken. There are many children like Senzo living in squatter camps, that are unable to go to school. Therefore, the children spend most of their days roaming the streets or playing outside, where they could end up being exposed to electrocution due to illegal wire connections.

Kid Aid aims to lessen the issues that the children face, not only in Slovo but other Squatter Camps as well. Its main focus is on education, food and wellness. Although, it will start off small with one squatter camp, with enough support and investment, it will surely grow into something that impacts a lot of lives in other Squatter Camps.
